Are Engagement Rings And Wedding Rings The Same?

Have you ever wondered whether you need to get a new ring and replace your engagement ring after you are married? Maybe you love the way your engagement ring sits by itself or you simply don’t want to add another expense on top of everything else you have going on for the wedding. Traditionally speaking, engagement rings and wedding rings are definitely not the same things. The engagement ring is given during a proposal and a wedding ring is a band that is placed on your ring finger during the wedding ceremony. But do you have to follow tradition?

How are engagement rings and wedding rings worn together?

Traditionally, the rings are worn on the same finger on your left hand. That finger would be your ring finger. Tradition also states that you should stack them a certain way. The wedding band is to be worn inside the engagement ring so that it is closer to your heart.

Do I have to wear them on the same finger?

You don’t have to wear your engagement and wedding rings in any particular way. While there are certain traditions and religions that follow specific guidelines, you can choose to do whatever you want with your rings. In fact, many brides will wear their engagement ring on one hand and their wedding band on the other hand. Others will wear them on the same hand but place them on different fingers. It really comes down to preference and how you want them to look on you.

Do I have to have both an engagement ring and a wedding ring?

The decision is absolutely yours. Tradition will state that you must have one engagement ring and one wedding ring, but ultimately, you can decide to do things however you want. If you would rather just have one ring, you can use your engagement ring during your wedding ceremony. Maybe you don’t have an engagement ring and would rather have a wedding band by itself. There is no right or wrong answer and you can choose to do whatever you like with the piece of jewelry that symbolizes your commitment to your partner.

Planning your wedding should be personal to you and your partner and making the choice between having an engagement ring, wedding band, or both is also a personal choice. Whatever you decide, just make sure it is something that brings joy to you and your partner throughout this journey together.
